Since 2011 IRIS Earth Model Collaboration (EMC) has served as a community-supported repository of Earth models with the aim of providing access to various Earth models with a uniform format (Network Common Data Form, netCDF). EMC also provides a set of online 2D visualization tools for model preview, which allow users to produce a variety of horizontal slices, vertical slices and velocity profiles from the Earth models. Auxiliary data such as topography, earthquake locations, plate boundaries, etc. may also be included on these plots. By installing this bundle, users will locally host the same visualization tools that are currently available from the IRIS EMC website. Using the local configuration parameters, users could customize plots and create visualization plots from their own local netCDF Earth model files.
This package can be installed on Mac and linux operating systems but does not support Windows OS. Setting up the bundle on Mac OS to use the local web server is simple and is described in the installation notes (INSTALL.txt file). For requirements and installation instructions visit the Wiki page.
We welcome patches and enhancements to this software. When developing patches, please pay particular attention to ease of use and maintenance and also keep dependencies to a minimum (contact the project).
Figure. EMC 2DV provides a set of visualization tools that are based on the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) plotting package and allow users to produce a variety of horizontal slices, vertical slices and velocity profiles from the Earth models. Users can further refine these plots by clicking and downloading the corresponding visualization bundle.
